Shirin

Shirin was born into a family of musicians. Both her mother and grandmother were both piano teachers, and so, naturally, she began learning music at a very young age. Once she experienced the thrill of performing, at the age of 13, she decided to make music her career. At the age of 23, after acquiring a degree in Business Management Shirin took up music as a full-time career. She taught music, performed gigs at hotels, weddings and corporate events and even managed artists.

In 2023, Shirin was a brand ambassador for the musical instrument brand ‘Casio’. Shirin has completed her Associate Trinity College London (ATCL) diploma in performance. ‘Everything I do is to be a better pianist’. With the ultimate goal of bettering herself as a musician, Shirin believes that alongside her own music education, teaching helps her get there as well. ‘I truly enjoy the slow and deliberate process of learning a new piece, implementing new techniques, stepping into the composer’s mind to truly understand that which led to or influenced this composition, interpreting every note and every pause in my own language of expression. Sharing this wisdom formed the basis of my teachingI want to facilitate a love for the instrument, love for expressing through music and a love for the process of learning music.

Ian

Hello! My name is Ian and I am a piano teacher and musician from Scotland. I have been teaching piano for 10 years this year, and hold a Bachelors of Music Degree in Classical Piano from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Having trained at RCS, I of course have a passion for classical music, teaching students to read music, and developing a strong and proficient technique. I took the ABRSM Grades myself all the way to Grade 8 (which I passed with distinction at age 17) and have taken numerous students through their grades with a 100% pass rate, and many achieving high distinction passes! I value the ABRSM system, and I can confidently guide a student through that process with my experience and expertise. However I also love jazz music, pop music and learning and playing by ear. I know all too well the thrill of being able to learn your favourite pieces just for the enjoyment of it, and I have had many happy students who have followed this more casual approach to learning to play the piano with me as their teacher. I aspire to be an encouraging, supportive tutor with every individual. Everybody is different, and we can work together to achieve what is best for you!

Additionally I play Alto and Soprano Saxophones to a +Grade 8 standard, as well as working as an actor, having graduated from RADA in 2020 – so I bring an all-round creative approach to my teaching!

Jill

Hello! I have been teaching piano since I graduated from the Royal Academy of Music. I teach both children and adults, from beginners to advanced. I also prepare students for exams – ABRSM/Trinity/Jazz/Rock School so I can offer a wide variety of repertoire even though my beginnings were very much classical.

I make lessons fun and it is important to me to get to know the individual and tailor lessons for them so that it brings out the best and the happiest scenario for the student. Technique and repertoire go hand in hand and no matter which route is taken it is important that there is a clear progression in standard.

I like to communicate openly and it is important if any pupil has any concerns about their lessons to always feel they can talk to me. I want every student to walk out of their piano lesson happy and wanting to come back!

Lessons take place at my house in Stroud Green where I have a lovely airy music room. I am able to have parents wait in my living room if that is needed. Currently I teach also at Parliament Hill School for Girls, Brookfield Primary School and the Camden Saturday Music Centre.

I’m proud Mum to a 10 year old daughter. When I’m not working I love walking, swimming, Pilates, cycling, sewing, singing and reading.

I have a wealth of experience and love passing on my passion for music to others. I look forward to hearing from you!

Peter

Peter first learnt the piano with Elizabeth Parfitt, continuing his studies at Trinity College of Music from 1978- 1983 with Joseph Weingarten.

He received a teaching diploma and later was awarded a British Council Scholarship to study at the Chopin Academy in Poland for two years with Regina Smendzianka. He has also studied at Goldsmiths College where he gained an MA in Performance Practice. His thesis was written on the current trends and performance possibilities available to solo pianists.

He was a piano lecturer at Middlesex University where he taught the piano on the BA course for seven years. Prior to that, Peter’s wide teaching experience included positions in the Mid-Herts Music Centre (where he taught for six years), at the specialist school “British Performing Arts School” in London, many private schools, kindergarten music lessons and private pupils, and Saturday morning classes.

He is currently teaching piano students privately and at the North London Conservatoire. Recently he has started to prepare students for GCSE Music.

Alexandra

Although currently only teaching adults, I have been running a busy teaching practice in Muswell Hill for over 30 years, teaching all ages and standards, and I ran the ABRSM exam centre from my house for around 10 years during that time. As a student, I studied Dance and Piano at Middlesex Polytechnic, then later on met Nelly Ben Or and studied intensively with her both privately and on her courses for many years, gaining a very deep understanding of how we can use the principles of the Alexander Technique at the piano.

During lockdown, when students were struggling to concentrate, I felt the most important thing was that people had a relief from the pandemic. We continued with pieces but focussed primarily on the enjoyment of playing and finding some solace. Some students enjoyed concentrating on details, but with others I concentrated on improvising and we found ourselves looking at the piano in almost a holistic sense, understanding how our life at the piano is a mere microcosm of our whole. This can have a strong impact on our approach whatever it is we do at the piano so my teaching continues to grow and develop into something very unique, while continuing to cover all the basics.

I still play myself; I can’t imagine not continuing with my own development, and am currently working on some two piano repertoire with a friend. I also play some jazz but am classically trained and teach from this perspective, making sure to include theory, harmony, technique, improvising, and everything else that makes the piano so wonderful!

Charlie

Hi, I’m Charlie. Originally from Brighton but now living in Camden, I have played the piano since I was nine years old. Having completed my Grade 8 at age 16, I am now ARSM qualified in Piano Performance. I am passionate about classical music and subsequently have a strong grasp on classical repertoire but I also equally enjoy teaching jazz and pop pieces. While I can advocate for the progression ABRSM and other boards’ grade systems can lend a pianist, I believe students should enjoy learning the pieces they play and therefore I am open to however my students want to learn. Having taught children as young as four, I am comfortable teaching all ages and aspire to tailor lessons to each individual and foster a love in music. In my free time, I often find myself either composing my own music or jamming with my flatmates.

Since 1996, her pupils have thrived in their lessons and given excellent feedback. Athen loves teaching children, teens and adults and tailors lessons to the individual – she aims to make learning accessible and build on what pupils can do. She is happy to guide pupils through the exam system if it is right for them, with exam results mostly merits and distinctions. She enjoys helping pupils explore standard or non-standard repertoire, use of technology and theory, as well as improvisation and composition.

Sonja

Sonja started playing piano at the age of 5 and from a young age participated and won prizes in numerous local and international competitions. She performed as a soloist, as a part of various chamber music ensembles, and as a duo with her brother Stanko Madic, a violinist.

She graduated with honours at Music Academy at University of Arts in Belgrade in 2004 where she gained her Masters degree a few years later.

After she graduated, she started her teaching career. Through the years she has enjoyed teaching children from age of 5 and up, keeping lessons fun and relaxed as well as preparing them for the exams, competitions and recitals.  Her students performed in many concerts and music festivals and many continued with music in their higher education.

She is dedicated and focused to bringing love for music and piano by adopting her approach and teaching to individual needs of every child. She enjoys helping them develop their own emotional creativity and imagination in comprehension of piano and music in general.

Anna

Anna has been privately teaching piano lessons in New Zealand for the past 2 years. Her students include young and adult beginners to sitting Grade 8 exams. She makes sure her young beginner students are learning and understanding musical concepts clearly, as well as having fun by using colour pencils and stickers. Students sitting exams have pre-planned lessons to make sure their goals are achieved in a timely manner.

Anna’s qualifications include ATCL in Music Performance (piano) and Grade 8 theory. Her notable achievements include achieving first in New Zealand for Advanced Certificate in 2014 (at age 18) and Grade 7 theory in 2013 (at age 17). From her history of classical performance, she knows exactly how to play a piece to communicate a music’s spirit. This is highly advantageous in exam settings as students will learn, in detail, how to express music and their own personal style to achieve a great mark.

Though Anna primarily focuses on reading music and theory in her lessons, she is open to accommodating to students that play by ear to pop songs, alternative songs etc. Playing pieces within her student’s interests gives them great enjoyment and an incentive to keep playing the piano; Anna enjoys seeing her students being excited and happy when playing a piece they like!

Debbie

Hello, my name is Debbie! I am a pianist with Grade 8 distinction and a recent graduate of the University of Bristol with a BA in Music. I started playing the piano when I was six and studied with a focus on Western Classical music and the Suzuki Method under the tutelage of Raymond Clarke, Yukiko Osedo and Esther Reinders.

I encourage students to draw out the musical intentions of the composer or style that they are exploring whether it be classical, pop or worship and more by emphasising musical sensitivity and stylistic nuances. Having taught for two years and serving as a church pianist for ten years, I am confident in interacting with all ages and abilities with patience, understanding, encouragement and a strong sense of responsibility. For students who wish to progress in grades, I aim to equip them with skills that meet the ABRSM or Trinity examination requirements.

Ultimately, I wish to stimulate my students’ love for the piano and music in general by building on their interests and challenging them to explore their musical capabilities.
